First test with 0.8mm nozzle. Curiously less warping than 0.4mm nozzle. Different kind of defect, where the waves don't fully reach the perimeter.
by ja
Sphere test, almost perfect, better than what I would get using supports. Default wave settings
Test for a decent sized counterbore overhang (20mm diametre inner hole, 40mm external), it's flawless. No warping, no other visible defects. Default wave settings, Elegoo Centauri Carbon, Elegoo PLA+
Almost perfect print on wave default settings (top cantilever actually a little better than same model printed in PETG with supports), Elegoo Centauri Carbon, Elegoo PLA+
Testing the limits with wave overhangs. From the 3rd revolution onward the errors stack up and result in layers failing.
by Rob
The front saucer came out wonderfully. The underside of the rear thrusters was a bridge; and I didn't try to use wave overhangs instead of bridges. I used minimal supports. Also; to explain for the layer shift, I was trying out a new filament pulley that had gotten snagged a few times.
The print performed very well. I watched the first layer of waves print, and I noticed one side of the waves was drooping slightly lower than the other. They connected fine; and the end result of the bottom layer looks more solid than some supports I've used. It's astounding.
Lots of warping, TPU comes out really rough
by Rob
It seems like the 100th sample is a failed one...
by Rob
Don't know how this one failed so bad. Changing the temperature next sample.
by Rob
Best TPU print so far. Huge amounts of warping
by Rob
Really good PETG-CF sample, some minor lifting near the edge of the print but looking really good.
by Rob
Don't know what exactly happened to this one, might be underextrusion or temperature too low.
by Rob
First PETG-CF print. Looking good but has some lifting near the corner
by Rob
First TPU test, simply failed
by Rob
Trying to find the limit of what is possible with this technique. A1 mini knocked the print off the bed because it kept returning to a position for time lapse
by Rob
Inclined overhang with a corner. Looks great and wave overhangs handle this really well.
by Rob
Trying different things to remove the lifting in the corner
by Rob
Tried to see how PLA would handle the same inclined part. The first layer where the overhanging section becomes bigger failed
by Rob
Even better than last PLA-GF sample, slight lifting near edge
by Rob
Tried to make an inclined and thicker overhanging version of the test prints, only one layer makes use of wave propagation
by Rob
Connection with the base support is better than last slicer version, slight lifting near the edge
by Rob
Tried replicating the best PETG result with the new slicer version, looks great
by Rob
Good print with the K1, only issue is the overhang warps upwards in sharp corners. Fantastic piece of software, will be using from now on
Elegoo Centauti Carbon, PETG. As expected, overhang went up. For a 1 cm overhang to go up 1 mm, it surely overheated a lot. Next time I'll make sure to drop 15-20 degrees from nozzle's default temperature. The printed bracket itself were usable, but not because of precise quality, but because of this level of inaccuracy were acceptable by design.
Elegoo Centauri Carbon, PETG. Circular overhangs are looking pretty good, but sharp edges are flying away up to 1 mm difference from base line to the cut edge. The print itself is successful, this fact alone amase me. But the quality as it is now is not near enough.
by iCpu
print went well. minor warping some surface artifacts from the increased flow and decreased spacing printed in PETG I used default PETG settings
Warping and layer separation at the bottom of the overhang area. Looked fine during first overhang layer. Got progressively worse with each layer on top until enough separation between nozzle and bottom layers occurred so bottom layers were no longer being reheated. The second layer of internal solid infill was horrendous and basically had no support because of the sagging caused by applying the first layer of solid infill. Probably clean enough for my prototyping but not for a finished produ
by bmartin598
Surprised by the first output. Much better than I expected. I will try some more complex parts and on different materials to see what this amazing thing can achieve. Thanks a lot.
Came out perfectly. Sliced on Prusa Slicer, printed on a modified Voron Trident
by surname
Default settings with Andersons algorithm.
Bottom looks good now, but there is some warping. part of it was from overhang layer, but most was from top layers
by Tornad
Start of line seems perfect, but it was picking up material on return move
by Tornad
Tried replicating the same result on a different printer. More warping observed.
by Rob
Lot of warping and rough surface finishes.
by Rob
Tried using only the auxiliary fan for cooling on the overhanging section per request. Very straight overhang, only when the pattern is automatically switched to monotonic does it fail. Intralayer thermal gradient seems to be minimized.
by Rob
The overhang turned out perfect, even after I had a power cut when the hotend was printing the overhang, and it continued without any issues. There is a bit of stringing, but structurally it looks sound. Material used was PC on my creality Hi printer.
by Uddhav
the print is very good keep in mind these extra settings i configured in the filament settings in the images i uploaded
best print so far on this is a VERY challenging test print. pattern: zigzag helped a lot against curling up at the end of paths. perimeter overlap: 0.15mm (instead of 0.1mm preset) helped to keep the perimeter wall attached to the wave structure. Hilbert curve floor (2 layers) at 50% density, 20mm/s speed with 0% fan speed showed big improvements against earlier tests (big layer separations after wave). test shows a slight lifting now, could possibly be improved with higher floor density
by fmod
Slight warping and layer separation.
by Gsonz
Only a slight disconnection between the waves and top layer causing a weakness. This issue is known and will be worked on.
by Rob
Only minimal warping of the PETG. Set the minimum wave time to 4 seconds to ensure that the sharp corners are filled.
by Rob
Again almost there, the minimum wave time is just slightly too much as the outer edge starts drooping a bit, changing it to 4 seconds next sample.
by Rob
Looking good, weird texture on the bottom side and slight warping.
by Rob
Good layer adhesion, weird texture on both top and bottom surfaces. Slight warping
by Rob
Monotonic pattern caused print to fail.
by Rob
Slight disconnection between the base of the model and the overhang. Looking good already but needs tweaking.
by Rob
Almost perfect again, slight lifting again, trying a different wave pattern next sample.
by Rob
First successful PLA-GF print, line spacing needs to be smaller to make layers adhere well. Needs more tweaking for more successful print.
by Rob
Almost perfect, just a small amount of lifting filament in the corner.
by Rob
Line spacing too high, line do not adhere well. Also the black ABS is mixed into the base.
by Rob
Good PETG print, filament lifting near the smaller waves.
by Rob
Looks good, only issue is warping. Probably the best ABS will get.
by Rob
Was fairly decent for not tweaking any of the settings, there was warping on all corners however, and there was some weirdness going on between the wave and standard layers. Printed with Sunlu PLA on a Voron 2.4 with an A4T toolhead.
by Ice
Small amount of warping, nearly perfect.
by Rob
More warping than last ABS sample, might be caused by me opening the enclosure during the wave section.
by Rob
Low amount of warping, small amount of lifting near the smaller wave section.
by Rob
Slightly better than last ABS print. Least warping so far.
by Rob
Line spacing a tad bit too much. Layers are seperating. Only slight warping. Ends of the smaller waves stick out again.
by Rob
Slight warping, noticed some curling on individual layers near the smaller waves.
by Rob
Good adhesion, some gaps between the waves and perimeter. Slight warping
by Rob
Very good adhesion between layers. Slight warping, not quite perfect.
by Rob
Good result, only there is a lot of warping present.
by Rob
Line spacing increased too much. Interlayer adhesion is suffering.
by Rob
The first overhang layer looked great, but once printing of the next layer started, the first one got bent downwards. Probably, there were some blobs protruding upwards from the first overhang layer, which then got caught by the nozzle, pushing the whole first layer down.
Looking really good, still a lot of warping.
by Rob
Huge step back from the last ABS print. Looks like underextrusion, will try higher wave flow next.
by Rob
Only problem with this print is the amount of warping observed.
by Rob
Better than the other PHA samples, but still not good enough. PHA warps in a completely different way than the other materials, PHA might not be suitable using the wave overhangs.
by Rob
On the flange the gaps between the holes and the edge are too small to wave through. Some warping also.
by ja
Shape is there, messed up on the perimeter. Material warps a lot even though it looks like it shouldnt.
by Rob
Not good at all, seems like the waves do not adhere to each other.
by Rob
good+... relatively low warping. Has gaps on straight sections and smaller features show consequences of warping. The large curve is near perfect
by Tawpie
Default settings
Still not good, very similar to last PHA sample.
by Rob
Line spacing might be too high, as the adhesion between layers is suffering (Classic ABS). Might be that this is printed in an open printer, will try later in an enclosed one. Warping is definitely less than the other ABS sample.
by Rob
It is getting there, still testing settings.
by Rob
First time ABS, printed in open air on the BBL A1 Mini. Layer adhesion is very good, only in the extremities there is some artifacting. Warps a lot though
by Rob
Failed, not sure why yet exactly
by Rob
It is getting there, on the good parts of the print, the curling is extreme
by Rob
Not a lot to say for this one
by Rob
Does not look well at all. It looks like a fly got stuck between two of the layers. Don't know exactly what needs changing yet.
by Rob
As expected similar results as just no floor layers
by Dennis
Even slower does not really seem to matter
by Dennis
Results seem slightly better with the slower layers ontop of the overhang layer
by Dennis
Even more warping caused by the line spacing.
by Rob
Increased the line spacing too much, warping as a result of it.
by Rob
Tried to mitigate the gaps by increasing the perimeter overlap. Might be the best sample so far. Waves are good and adhere well with each other.
by Rob
Even bigger gaps near the perimeter, starting to become a problem especially in the inner corner. Waves once again look nice
by Rob
Bigger gaps starting to form near the perimeter due to line spacing. Waves look nice
by Rob
Print overall is very good, slight warping in the overhang caused some overextrusion in subsequent layers.
by Rob
Hilbert floor + 30% fan (vs 100% default). Thought slower cooling reduces stress lock-in. However, it warped worse, not better. Hot floor likely sagged into and pulled on the wave during its longer cooldown
by Dennis
Even for cases that can be printed with bridges, result might be better with waveoverhangs.
by Dennis
60% vs 100% Hilbert curve did not seem to make a difference
by Dennis
First test with Hilbert-curve settings (https://github.com/dennisklappe/OrcaSlicer-WaveOverhangs/pull/34), definitely some less warping. Will do some more tests and also compare to just no top-layers at all. Will release this later today.
by Dennis
Tested corner-aware spacing taper (https://github.com/dennisklappe/OrcaSlicer-WaveOverhangs/pull/29) on the small corner, need some more testing to see it's usefulness.
by Dennis
I get an error saying vector too long when i try to slice. i cant even get to the point where i try to physically print the model. I have provided the 3mf file so hopefully it'll help you all debug this.
Not quite perfect, quite a bit of warping in the extremities. Between a 4 and 5 I would say
by Rob
Even better than last sample. Warping only near the smaller wave segments but minimal. Tuning line spacing such that there is barely the adhesion to suspend the material mid air might give the best results. However, there are gaps starting to form near the perimeter as a result of the line spacing.
by Rob
Very good sample, increased the line spacing to above 0.4 to 0.42. The only issue on this sample is the warping in the area with concentrated waves.
by Rob
Small amount of layer separation, as seen in photo 2. Minimal warping, only near the smaller waves. On the top side, the waves and perimeter do not properly connect, but can already be seen in the gcode viewer.
by Rob
Not a lot of warping, though there are some spots where there are gaps between tracks and the perimeter (See photo 2).
by Rob
Better overall compared to the last. Warping similar to last as well. The rough surface is less than before.
by Rob
Adhesion between base and overhang weak, line spacing causing issues near perimeter. Warping is less than last sample.
by Rob
The connection between the base of the model and the wave overhang is weak. A wavy pattern can be identified on the bottom and top surface again. Significant warping again
by Rob
First decent PLA-CF print. There is a weird texture on both the bottom and top surface, which could be the cause of too much overlap. Layer adhesion is better than PTSample25. A lot of warping is still observed.
by Rob
Tried with PLA-CF, no layer adhesion at all.
by Rob
Print quality overall very good, the main issue here is the amount of warping.
by Rob
Only a slight disconnection between the perimeter before the curve. Warping is the bigger issue
by Rob
Tried upping the wave flow to see effect. Apart from a small disconnection in the inner corner of the sample, the print looks great. A lot of warping is present though.
by Rob
Noticed underextrusion and simply no connection between the start of the curve in the overhang and the perimeter. A lot of warping present.
by Rob
A lot of overextrusion, very much visible on both the top and bottom. Warping caused the nozzle to interfere when printing the perimeters, causing the sample to fly off the build plate. Accidentally used the wrong filament profile, temperatures were higher than normally used.
by Rob
Rough perimeter and disconnection between waves and perimeter. A lot of warping but shape is there
by Rob
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2151369/
by ja
Apart from the same artifact that appeared during the last sample, the print quality is overall very good, a lot of warping is identified.
by Rob
Tried another printer and the new Orcaslicer version for the first time. Noticed a lot of underextrusion with the same converted settings as PTSample 8 and 14. Also a new artifact appeared between corners.
by Rob
Just warping, no delamination. Underside looks flawless
by Cocoanix
Went insanely well but after floor layer was placed it just warped. Will try without floor layers.
by Cocoanix
Basically perfect (dirty nozzle caused black strings in print). I printed this for my youtube video that is in production.
by Cocoanix
Very low perimeter quality due to extremely low layer time.
by ja
Zig zag behaviour unexpectedly stops towards the end of the overhang.
by ja
Almost perfect, small disconnections between the perimeter, tried replicating the same result as PTSample8 and PTSample14, but with different filament
by Rob
Very similar results to 13, seems to pull back on the material
by Rob
Almost perfect again, wanted to replicate the result from PTSample8, same result is found.
by Rob
Same weird starting lines, looks like overextrusion but the parameters are roughly the same. *PATTERN USED IS "SMART", unlike photo*
by Rob
Weird starting lines, overall not very good quality though shape is properly retained
by Rob
Still shows signs of overextrusion, overall looks clean, nozzle still dragging across the layers.
by Rob
Shows signs of overextrusion, but overall looks clean. Nozzle is dragging across the layers.
by Rob
Shows signs of overextrusion, nozzle is dragging across the layers, causing them to disconnect near perimeter
by Rob
Almost perfect, not quite, perimeter on a different level than the rest of the overhang
by Rob
Waves not connected to the perimeter on a couple points
by Rob
Waves not connected to the perimeter on a couple points
by Rob
Generally dimensional inaccurate, perimeter on different level, edges not connected
by Rob
Very poor quality, not dimensionally accurate at all, a lot of underextrusion.
by Rob
Very poor quality, not dimensionally accurate at all. A lot of underextrusion
by Rob
Takes somewhat of a form, but still does not resemble the model
by Rob
Does not take form at all. Poor adhesion between layers
by Rob
